Although rising soul singer Joy Postell calls Baltimore home, one of the most pivotal experiences in her life was working in a series of Los Angeles dispensaries. Largely informed by her time spent on the West Coast, the five tunes that Postell, who has shared stages with acts like Dan Deacon, Future Islands‘ Samuel T. Herring and saxophone virtuoso Kamasi Washington, has picked capture both her refined taste and her encyclopedic knowledge of hip-hop and soul music. From her insights into Bob Marley’s running habits, to an unearthed and very early Kendrick Lamar track, there is something in this High Five for everyone.
And while you’re locked in the groove, here are some other High Fives, from Blues Traveler Brendan Hill, Run the Jewels manager Will Bronson, and legendary Rolling Stone magazine editor Ben Fong-Torres.
